What Is the Select Program?
MVGSA is excited to continue to participate with other USA Softball leagues and offer the Select Softball Program.
Each year many softball families face a dilemma: continue playing recreational softball, or make the big jump to travel softball. For recreational players who have developed a higher level of skill, the natural progression is a move to competitive softball — but that jump asks a family for a sizable commitment in both time and money. There has long been a need for an option in between strict recreational play and highly committed competitive play. That is where the Select Program comes in.
Select is a program developed by USA Softball that lets advanced players compete at a more challenging level during the recreational season. Select teams play against All-Star caliber teams from other leagues within the Eastern District and USA Softball of Southern California — a higher level of competition, at a low cost, without compromising the integrity of the primary recreational league.
Select is an option for the 8U through 18U divisions. The Fall Select 2026 season runs September 1, 2026 through December 31, 2026.

⏰ Please arrive in time for check-in — evaluations begin promptly at the listed time. There is one tryout date for all eligible players; additional dates may be added at the discretion of the Select Committee.

Who Is Eligible

Players must be registered with MVGSA for the Fall 2026 season per USA Softball requirements, and all current and past registration fees must be paid in full.

Players must try out and play per the USA Softball age eligibility chart. A player may play up in a higher rec division and still try out for her regular age division's Select team.

A player may try out for a higher age division — but may try out for only ONE age division. Attending a division's tryout signifies she intends to play if offered a spot on that team.

To pitch or catch in the Select season, a player must have evaluated as a pitcher or catcher during regular rec evaluations.

Select teams may NOT include travel ball players who participated on a travel-type team.

The Commitment

Select players MUST participate in MVGSA recreational league practices and games. At no time does Select come before a player's commitment to her rec team.

Players must simultaneously commit to at least 75% of their Select team's activities — and 75% of rec ball. Softball is expected to be a priority over other extracurricular activities.

Practices, friendlies, and tournaments are on Sundays only during the regular rec season.

Any player who fails to adhere to the required time commitments may be dismissed from the Select team. Head coaches may request to add or cut players based on performance, attitude, attendance, or team chemistry, subject to Select Committee and Divisional VP review.
⚠️ Important — Please Read Before Trying Out
Players shall participate on the team for which they were selected. If your daughter makes a team and chooses not to accept the offer or quits, she will be ineligible for Spring Select 2027 and All-Stars 2027 with MVGSA. Players who are not selected remain fully eligible for MVGSA's summer All-Star teams.

How Teams Are Formed

Players are evaluated by the division's Select head coach, the Select Committee, and any additional evaluators invited by the Committee.

The head coach selects players based on tryout evaluations and prior performance record; previous MVGSA coaches may be consulted. The Select Committee reviews and approves every roster as oversight.

Rosters may carry up to fifteen (15) players per USA Softball rules, with a minimum of twelve (12). MVGSA prefers smaller rosters whenever possible.

Selected players will be notified by their division's approved Select head coach.

Teams will ONLY be formed if a competitive team can be formed. A division may have only one team — or, depending on player talent, no team at all.

Head coaches must have managed or coached within MVGSA and/or have All-Star level experience, must be a previous Spring 2026 or current Fall 2026 rec head coach, and are selected by the Select Committee and approved by the MVGSA Board. Coaches are volunteers and are not paid.

🥎 MVGSA Pays For
Tournament balls, chalk, lights, field usage, and uniforms are paid for by the league. Uniforms are tops only, and all divisions are required to wear matching tops designated by the Select Committee.
Select teams are financially supported by the league — all proposed activities and expenditures must be approved by the Board of Directors.

Select teams are self-funded for umpire fees for friendlies and any additional tournaments beyond the two covered.
✈️ Travel
Parents are responsible for travel expenses for tournaments.
🤝 Team Sponsorship
Each team must acquire one $250 team sponsorship (team plaque + website recognition).
👟 Extra Gear
Any items beyond what MVGSA furnishes are purchased separately at the player's cost. Expenses above the registration fee are decided within the team — no team can mandate 100% participation.

Team sponsorship due. Each Select team is required to acquire its $250 team sponsorship by September 26, 2026. Contributions are 100% tax deductible — Tax ID #77-0312910.

Team Operations & Fundraising
🚫
Individual Select team fundraising is NOT allowed. There will be one (1) board-organized fundraiser.
🧾
Each team must provide two (2) financial representatives from different families. They may not be the head coach's spouse or a relative of the head coach, and cannot be the league Treasurer. Reps submit a bi-weekly itemized expense report to all parents, the Divisional VP, and the Treasurer.

Entry into any friendly or tournament requires prior notification to the Divisional VP and approval by the Board and the Eastern District Commissioner.
💰
All money raised by a team is turned in to MVGSA. Reimbursements require a receipt or invoice submitted to the league Treasurer. Any funds remaining at the end of the Select season stay with MVGSA.

Any Select head coach ejected from a tournament game has 24 hours to present a written statement to their Divisional VP.

Parent Conduct

MVGSA will not tolerate any behavior on the field or in the stands that hinders the spirit of good sportsmanship and cooperation we work to encourage.

At NO time will MVGSA permit or condone foul and/or abusive language in the vicinity of any team event.

No alcohol, tobacco, vaping, nicotine, or smoking is permitted in the vicinity of any team event.

The conduct of any guest is the responsibility of the adult whose child participates on an MVGSA Select team.

The MVGSA Disciplinary Policy is enforced for all coaches, players, and spectators, subject to the Conduct Committee, along with the MVGSA Charter By-Laws and Rules and Regulations.
