We've changed the way that we list the scores, standings, and pitchers' outs. Like in most other sports that have ties, we assign 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 points for a loss. We now divide the number of points the team has earned by the total number of points possible in games played to get a winning percentage.
Here's how it breaks down: If Team #1 plays 10 games, wins 7, loses 2 and ties 1; they have 22 points total (7 wins @ 3 points per win=21 points; 1 tie @ 1 point per tie=1 point. 21 + 1 = 22). Team #1's total number of possible points is 10x3=30 points (10 games, 3 points per win). Team #1's winning percentage is 22/30 = .733.
If Team #2 plays 12 games, wins 8, loses 2 and ties 2; they have 26 points total (8 wins @ 3=24 points; 2 ties @ 1 point=2 points. 24+2=26. Team #2's total number of possible points is 12x3=36 (12 games, 3 points per win). Team #2's winning percentage is 26/36=.722.
Team #1 will be rated higher, even though Team #2 had more wins, more ties, and more points.
